Bio
Fish Yu is a Toronto-based composer, audio-visual technologist, and media artist. His work merges music, technology, and storytelling, integrating acoustic, electroacoustic sound, visual, and immersive spatial audio. He explores how acoustic instruments, electronic processing, visual elements, and lighting interact to create expressive and multidimensional artistic experiences.
Yu’s compositions have been performed and broadcast internationally on platforms such as the International Rostrum of Composers, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, International Computer Music Conference, etc. His electroacoustic work Torrent for flute and electronics, won third prize at the Isidora Žebeljan International Festival, while Please Don’t Open for trombone and electronics was nominated for the 67th International Rostrum of Composers (IRC). His multimedia work The God of Cookery, blending speech, percussion, electronics, and video, won the Karen Kieser Prize.
Beyond composition, Yu is a media artist and audio-visual technologist who works in sound design, live electronics, and audio-visual production. He acts as Media Director for the RCM New Music Ensemble, New Music Concerts, Happenstancers and an A/V Engineer for Continuum Contemporary Music, Happenstancers and individual artists in Toronto. His projects include surround sound and Dolby Atmos recordings, such as Sounds of Cities and Mystery of Clock. His multimedia works have been featured in programs like Continuum’s HATCH tour and the International Computer Music Conference 2024 in Seoul.
Yu’s music bridges cultures, technologies, and disciplines, blending Eastern and Western traditions with contemporary digital techniques. He holds degrees from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the University of Toronto, where he is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition.
